Over 70 years of cruise history from a traditional cruise line- the Italian way of discovering the world

Costa Crociere is one of Italy's leading cruise lines. Since 2000 it has been part of the global player Carnival Corporation & plc. Costa Cruises has been taking holidaymakers to the most beautiful regions of the world since 1948. No wonder that Costa combines tradition and modernity like no other cruise line. The cruise line is based in the city of Genoa, which is so important for Italian maritime history. With currently 10 ships, the traditional company is one of the largest cruise fleets in Europe. The following ships are available on the western market: the flagship Costa Toscana, Costa Smeralda, Costa Deliziosa, Costa Diadema, Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, Costa Firenze, Costa Fortuna, Costa Pacifica. The Costa Serena will be used for cruises for the Asian market as of 2024. The company has made it its mission to equip each of its liners with “La Dolce Vita”. On the ships you can feel the Italian zest for life in every corner. Guests can expect the highest level of relaxation with lively entertainment – complemented, of course, by the appropriate Mediterranean cuisine. It is hardly surprising that Costa has a high percentage of satisfied guests.

Costa Cruises' ships are traditionally built in the Italian style. Beauty, elegance and an ambience focused on comfort and entertainment make your stay a pleasure. The cruise line with its logo made of yellow chimneys and a large shaped "C" is known for the high level of service and amenities it offers. Many valuable original works of art - including sculptures, paintings and hand-made decorations - shape the interior design.

History: new ideas and fresh concepts

The history of the innovative cruise company begins in 1948. Previously, the Costa family, the owners, had transported fabrics and, above all, olive oil. That year, however, the first passenger cruise from Genoa to Buenos Aires took place. In 1960, Costa was the first cruise company to offer its guests tours to the Caribbean. In 1968, the cruise line combined the arrival of passengers to the departure ports under the groundbreaking slogan “Flight + Cruise”. The Italians are also leaders in the equipment of their ships: the Costa Atlantica set sail in 2000 as the first cruise ship in Europe to also have cabins with private balconies. Costa was also the first cruise line to offer cruises from Chinese ports

The ships: elegance and comfort

Each ship in the Costa fleet has its own unique style. They impress their guests with a typical Italian  elegance. The yellow chimneys, which also appear in the logo, are typical. There is a suitable cruiser for every requirement and every type of holiday!

Leading the fleet since 2022: flagship Costa Toscana

The highly anticipated Costa Toscana replaced her sister Costa Smeralda as the new flagship after being built at the Finnish Meyer Turku shipyard in 2021. The cruise ship has been sailing in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf since 2022. Like its twin, the new ship will also be operated with liquefied natural gas both in the port and at sea. According to the shipping company, the ships will act as maritime ambassadors for Italy. Often asked via Google: What can the Costa Toscana do?
The Megaliner offers space for 6,338 passengers in 2,663 cabins. A crew of 1,678 takes care of the well-being of the guests. The Costa Toscana is also 337 meters long and 42 meters wide. What are the facilities like on board? The gastronomic variety is well represented: the new flagship includes a wide variety of restaurants (thanks to full board, many restaurants are already included in the travel price) and bars. When it comes to shows, sports activities and variety of entertainment, the Costa Toscana is in no way inferior to its sister. At the aqua park, guests big and small can let off steam in four pools and on the water slide, and the fun continues straight away on the outdoor playground. After all the fun, relaxation and quiet hours are offered at the huge spa area, which impresses with various saunas as well as massage and beauty treatments. Active passengers who don't want to neglect their training during the cruise will appreciate the advantages of the wonderfully equipped fitness room and the multi-purpose sports field.

Costa Smeralda: for the sake of the environment with liquid gas

Since 2019, the Costa Smeralda has impressed its guests with its contemporary style, which, like all of the shipping company's other ships, exudes Italian flair. In addition to exciting culinary places such as the taste studio, the Costa Smeralda is geared towards families, true to the southern way of life, which runs through all areas: examples include the family restaurant and the baby squok club. While the little ones are lovingly looked after there, their parents will find plenty of stimulating and relaxing entertainment options on the ships. What are the highlights on board the Costa Smeralda? Guests can especially let off steam in terms of gastronomy and feast their way through eleven restaurants and snack bars. Refreshments, drinks and coffee can be sampled in one of the 19 bars. Wellness lovers love the huge spa area. An aqua park with slides and a total of four different pools round off the offering for water lovers.

Costa Firenze: where art is at home

The Costa Firenze is a homage to the city of Florence in Tuscany, Italy. The architecture, design, interior and style in every corner of the ship are reminiscent of the art metropolis, which is also considered the cradle of the Renaissance. Whether it's a leisurely stroll across the outside deck, a gourmet meal at one of the restaurants and snack bars or a leisure refreshment break in the bars and lounges: the magic of Florence and its sights is visible everywhere. The Vista class cruise ship, built in 2020, measures 323 meters in length and 37 meters in width. 2,116 cabins and suites for 5,200 passengers are spread over 14 decks; 969 balcony cabins are available.
What does the ocean liner have to offer in terms of entertainment? The aqua park on deck 14 promises plenty of action in the swimming pools and water slides during the day. At the Rope Garden Adventure Park high ropes course (entrance fee applies), various platforms, ziplines and suspension bridges provide adrenaline rushes. The fitness center and various sports courses invite both active athletes and beginners to join in. Relaxation can be found at the Solemio Spa. Everything that immensely flatters your own well-being can be found here: various saunas, wellness treatments such as massages and of course cosmetic treatments such as manicures and pedicures. Solariums and whirlpools round off the offer. At the theater, guests can enjoy spectacular entertainment every evening: musicals, comedy shows, acrobatic talents and themed events are just some of the diverse program highlights.

Costa Diadema: The “Queen of the Mediterranean”

The ship, built at the Fincantieri shipyard (in Trieste, Italy), went on its maiden voyage in autumn 2014 and opened up new dimensions for guests. More space, more innovations and the exclusive interior offer up to 4,947 passengers a completely new cruise experience. Various main restaurants and specialty restaurants as well as various bars, cafés and lounges create the perfect setting for culinary discoveries. The range extends from Japanese cuisine to our own Gelateria Amarillo. The chefs are happy to take special circumstances into account and also cook vegan or allergy-friendly dishes for guests.
Wellness luxury: the huge Samsara Spa, 6,000 square meters of space spread over three decks, is particularly spectacular and very popular with those seeking relaxation from all over the world. Among others, guests can look forward to a Finnish sauna, a Turkish steam bath, a laconium (dry sweating room) and a seawater pool that is used for thalassotherapy. Various thermal courses as well as facial and body treatments are of course not to be missed. What is striking aboard all ships of the Costa fleet: art is everywhere. Whether paintings or sculptures: 190 originals and 7,874 reproductions by well-known and up-and-coming artists can be admired on the Costa Diadema, for example. The works represent themes from the Italian Renaissance and contemporary pop culture.

Costa Deliziosa: ship of great feelings combines elegance and comfort

The Costa Deliziosa is particularly elegant: a successful combination of glass and steel, underlined by the unique lighting, ensures a bright feeling of space. Here the sculpture, “The Ball”, by the Milanese artist Arnaldo Pomodoro in the atrium is particularly effective. The ship was launched in January 2009. It was christened in Dubai in 2010 on the occasion of the opening of the cruise terminal in Port Rashid. 934 crew members are there for up to 2,826 guests, who can explore all the wellness and entertainment venues in addition to the 1,1130 different cabins and suites. Interesting fun fact: the twelve decks of the Deliziosa have names of different flowers - including Gardenia, Magnolia and Orchidea. What entertainment options are there? Whether it's the 4D cinema Étoiles, the Grand Prix racing car simulator with real single-seaters or the golf simulator: fun and entertainment is also well catered for in this regard. A spacious wellness area, various bars and restaurants round off the extensive offer  on this ship.

Costa Fascinosa: the perfect holiday setting

The Costa Fascinosa was commissioned in May 2012. A maximum of 3,800 passengers can be accommodated on 13 passenger decks and are pampered by a crew of 1,110. Identical to the Costa Favolosa, the furnishings of the Costa Fascinosa are inspired by the masterpieces of cinema and theater. The interior is dedicated to cinema and opera personalities. What does the ship have to offer in terms of dining and entertainment? Five excellent restaurants, twelve stimulating bars, a 4D cinema, the Samsara Spa and a casino - to name just a few examples - ensure wonderful experiences.

Costa Favolosa: the fairytale castle among cruise ships

Anyone who boards this cruiser, built in 2011, will immerse themselves in the magical world of fairy tales and kings. Guests can feel like a prince or princess here. The Costa Favolosa always surprises - be it with the Gothic-style atrium or a lounge in which Swarovski crystals shine. Each deck is dedicated to a different structure, which also influences the respective interior design. The ship was launched in August 2010 and the last renovation took place in 2018. Like the Costa Fascinosa, the Favolosa also offers a home for up to 3,800 guests at sea.

Costa Pacifica: the “Ship of Music” houses its own recording studio

The designers used the harmonious world of music as a template for the architecture and furnishings aboard the Costa Pacifica. Musical notes can be found on the decor, among others. The 14 decks are each dedicated to a different melody - examples include Adagio, Azzurro, Bohème, Feel Good or Summertime. The different types of interior design ultimately combine to create a harmonious overall picture.

Already knew? The composer Mauro Pagani was responsible for the arrangement of all the music on the ship, which was built in 2009. One of his compositions can be heard in the spectacular atrium, which features panoramic elevators. Modern and classical music form the acoustic concept of every cruise. Speaking of melody: guests can record their own songs at the ship's own recording studio!

Costa Fortuna: immerse yourself in history

This impressive liner is reminiscent of bygone times: advertising posters from the 1920s and 1930s show transatlantic ships of the time and decorate the public areas. In the entrance hall there are models of the cruise line's earlier ships - pure nostalgia! The Fortuna's furnishings are modern and luxurious: four swimming pools, water slides, a disco or casino ensure that there is no chance of boredom. The ship was launched in 2002, but was extensively renovated and partly  completely redesigned by the end of 2019. In addition to new shops, the cabins have also been renovated and are now similar in style and furnishings to those found on the newest fleet member Costa Smeralda.

Cabins and suites: how are guests accommodated on the ships of the Costa fleet?

Passengers travel to the most beautiful destinations in Europe and beyond at the highest level of comfort on the exclusive liners in the Costa fleet. The luxurious ambience combines with an elegant wellness atmosphere - and this can also be felt in the cabins and suites. All cabins are equipped with a private shower room, individually controlled air conditioning, satellite TV, interactive television with pay-TV films (on almost all ships), satellite telephone and a direct line to the interior areas of the ship as well as a minibar, safe and hairdryer. In the suites, guests not only have more space, but also exclusive service.

Very close to the Beauty Spa Solemio!

Many guests like to book the cabins and suites located near the spa, which have free access to the wellness area already included in the travel price. The rooms are located in close proximity to the thermal area, which covers around 6,000 square meters spread over three decks. When booking these special categories, guests enjoy even further privileges. On which ships can I book the wellness cabins and suites?
This is currently possible on the ships Costa Diadema, Costa Fascinosa, Costa Pacifica, Costa Favolosa and Costa Deliziosa.

Mobility: disabled-friendly public areas and cabins

Accessibility is also very important on the Costa fleet! Almost all public areas on board such as elevators, outside decks, bars, public toilets and restaurants are barrier-free. Orientation instructions in profile and Braille on elevators and cabin doors support people with visual impairments. The safety videos are translated into sign language. The theater also has parking spaces for wheelchair users in combination with seats for the accompanying person. Costa Cruises offers disabled-friendly cabins in various categories on all of its ships. The advantages: wider doors, lower beds, grab bars in the bathrooms. Note: The cabins in these categories are in demand and therefore sell out quickly on certain cruise routes. If you have any questions about occupancy, please contact our experts at kreuzfahrten.de.

Gastronomy concept: thanks to full board, food at the main restaurants is included!

Eating, enjoying and socializing are very important on cruises. So it's no wonder that Costa ships offer their guests a culinary variety. Of course, traditional Italian cuisine is, to a certain extent, Costa's specialty. But the approximately 500 Costa chefs also conjure up international dishes and traditional menus from the regions visited. Fresh ingredients, the highest quality and variety also make the cruise with Costa a delight for the palate. Gala dinners and gastronomic events take place during every Costa cruise. The midnight buffet, for example, also takes you on a culinary journey around the world. On the Costa Diadema and the Costa Smeralda, the Occident and the Orient come together in the most beautiful way at the Teppanyaki restaurant. At Gelateria Amarillo, the ships offer Italian ice cream prepared directly on board. And what could be more authentic than an original Italian pizza? Guests experience this pleasure in the pizzerias on Costa ships.

What restaurants are there on Costa cruise ships?

Buffet restaurants they are located on the upper decks and offer beautiful panoramic views of the sea and passing landscapes. Every Costa ship offers such a restaurant with an individual theme.

À la carte-Restaurants: on every ship, guests will find at least one main restaurant. They enjoy the highlights of Italian cuisine or try typical dishes from the country they are currently in.

Club-Restaurants: gourmet fans can expect an intimate atmosphere, spectacular sea views and great cuisine. Club restaurants can be found on most Costa ships - and they are available for a small extra charge (with reservation) for a special evening. Creations from outstanding chefs: fish of particularly high quality and selected dishes accompanied by exclusive wines are also served.

Full board: what meals are included in the travel price?

Whether a sumptuous breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks: During their Costa cruise, guests enjoy full board in the main restaurants, be it buffet or à la carte, which is included in the cruise price. Each ship houses various specialty restaurants (e.g. Asian cuisine, barbecue dishes) which are not included and cost an additional charge.

Prices and packages: how much do drinks cost on Costa cruises? Are drinks free?

The basic catering does not include drinks from the bar, lounge, cafés or restaurants. However, guests can help themselves during meals at the self-service water station at the buffet restaurants. If you prefer other refreshments and thirst quenchers, you should plan for this when budgeting for your vacation. Mineral water starts from €1.00, soft drinks such as Pepsi from €3.70 and juices from €3.10. You can enjoy non-alcoholic cocktails from around €6.00, while variants with rum, gin etc. can be found on the drinks menu from €7.00. Wine of various types starts from €5.70 and you can treat yourself to beer from €4.00. Do you love hot coffee specialties? An espresso costs €2.20 and a cappuccino costs €3.00. If you book a Costa cruise for an all-inclusive fare, you can enjoy all drinks, whether with or without alcohol, at no extra charge.

Price tip & My Drinks: save money with various drink packages

Have you booked the full board fare without refreshments? Then it might be worth taking a look at the optional drinks packages. As of January 2024: you have the choice between My Drinks and My Drinks Plus. So you can enjoy a hot coffee with milk not just for breakfast, but whenever you want. My Drinks covers a relatively large selection of drinks and cocktails, while the Plus version also covers other premium brands and champagne.

Frequently asked question: do you take drinks on board with Costa cruises? Is that possible?

No, it is not permitted to take drinks or food on board.

Note for allergy sufferers, diabetics, vegetarians and vegans

For those who have to forego certain ingredients for personal or health reasons: aboard the Costa fleet, the crew also pampers their guests with special dietary requirements, for example diabetics or allergy sufferers. If specific diets are required, this should be discussed upon  booking.

For music fans and those with a sweet tooth: what do the bars offer?

No Costa ship is without the Grand Bar. It is the perfect place to start the evening - with a good drink and lots of music. You can dance! Live  music caresses the ear in the Piano Bar. Those with a sweet tooth are particularly well looked after on the Costa Diadema, Costa Fascinosa, Costa Favolosa, Costa Deliziosa & Costa Pacifica: there the chocolate bar delights with delicious chocolates and the chocolate fountain.

Wellness and sport: journey into your own well-being

Relaxation and exercise become easy with Costa cruises. The sports and wellness program on the fleet includes a wide variety of sporting activities and wellness treatments. Guests can have their body and soul pampered and truly relax - this is how to have a relaxing dream vacation on a cruise ship! The facilities and experienced trainers, therapists and beauticians leave nothing to be desired. How about one of the many beauty treatments? In addition to extensive hair care, other treatments strengthen the muscles and smooth the complexion. But classic manicures and pedicures as well as teeth whitening are also available. Or how about a Finnish full body massage? Basics such as a fresh manicure or eyebrow correction are of course also on the price list.

The Beauty Spa Solemio stands for relaxed deceleration, relaxation and enjoyment. Day after day, consultants put together a wellness program tailored to the guest with brine, thalassotherapy and massage therapies as well as cleansing rituals. A the thermal spa area, wellness fans can expect various steam baths, a relaxation temple and a tea house. Covered pools, a jogging track on the upper deck or free training at the fitness center – there are many ways to keep fit at sea aboard the Costa ships. There are free courses and the option to book personal training for an additional charge. There are also aerobics studios on most ships.

Family traveling: Costa cruises with children

There is a new trend among German cruise guests: vacationing together with multiple generations. The cruise line Costa Cruises takes its guests to twelve of the most beautiful regions in the world. Historical sites, natural beauties, wild coasts or pulsating metropolises: these are fantastic sailing areas that can be most beautifully discovered by modern cruise ships. The range extends from short cruises to extended cruises to transatlantic ocean cruises and world cruises that will make even your travel agent green with envy. How about Barcelona, Rome, Palermo? Or would you rather take a detour to Istanbul, Corfu or Trieste? Costa sails to the most beautiful areas in the eastern and western Mediterranean. Or you can go on a long voyage north and travel the coasts and fjords of Norway. A cruise to the most beautiful and exciting metropolises on the Baltic Sea is also part of the catalog. Costa ships also travel to the Orient, for example to Dubai. Many people associate a cruise with the deep blue sea, white sandy beaches and palm trees. This is also possible with Costa Cruises. The provider takes its guests to the Caribbean, Mexico and/or the Antilles. There is also a lot of nature, ancient cultures and exciting destinations to discover on the Indian Ocean and in Asia. With Costa you can explore wonderful islands and the Far East. If you've always wanted to get to know the Brazilian jungle, Chilean wine culture and Argentine joie de vivre, Costa is also the right choice for you. You can also use your own cell phone to make worldwide calls via satellite on Costa ships. This is also possible from the telephones in the cabins. Guests can also use the internet with laptops, smartphones and tablets. All ships have Wi-Fi service in many cabins and public areas. Prepaid fares can be booked for this. You can also surf the World Wide Web at public computer terminals. And with the free app “MyCosta Mobile” you can chat on all Costa ships for free and without a time limit - a clever alternative.

Fill out the ship manifest online via “Costa Web Check-In”.

The so-called onboard manifest is mandatory for every guest traveling at sea. This document enables embarkation and entry at the ports. With the Costa web check-in, all important data for departure can be quickly and easily transmitted to the cruise line- simply log in with the booking number from the day of booking and fill it out.

How do I pay aboard Costa ships?

With CartaCosta, guests pay on board conveniently with their signature. The costs will be credited to the cabin account and settled at the end of the cruise. If you want to pay in cash, you must pay a deposit before the start of your cruise. Payment by credit card is also possible; this must be registered on board no later than 48 hours after boarding.

Dress code tips: what is the dress code on the ships in the Costa fleet?

The atmosphere on Costa cruise ships is relaxed and casual. When going ashore, you should have clothing appropriate to the local weather and cultural conditions. Things can be more elegant on special occasions such as gala dinners. At special events like the White Night Party, wearing white clothing is essential. Travelers should bring swimwear with them for the pool and spa area. Sporty outfits are a must in the fitness center and also when participating in various tournaments and games.

What about smoking and vaping on a Costa cruise?

As with almost all cruise lines, smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes on Costa Cruises is only permitted in designated areas, the smoking points, and in the cigar lounges. Smoking is still permitted on the private balcony, but not in the cabin. However, vaping e-cigarettes is permitted here.

Sustainability at Costa: social commitment and environmental protection

Social responsibility and environmental protection are two topics that are very important to the Costa company. As far as social commitment is concerned, the “Costa Crociere Foundation” is particularly noteworthy: together with the “Francesca Rava Foundation”, in the most recent project in 2019, new items from Costa cruise ships that were no longer needed, such as furniture, crockery and home textiles, were donated to the poorest suburbs of Haiti and given away. Costa Crociere has also been cooperating with the “Italian National Research Council” (CNR) since February 2015. For example, the state organization for the protection and development of overarching interests provides large-scale Italian fisheries with electronic acoustic devices that protect whales and dolphins from nets. When it comes to environmental friendliness, the newest flagship of the  cruise line Costa Smeralda is particularly exemplary: the liner takes first place in the Nabu cruise ranking together with the AIDAnova.
Which languages are spoken on board?

The onboard languages offered vary depending on the cruise line. In addition to the German cruise lines AIDA, TUI Cruises and PHOENIX, cruise lines such as Costa and MSC also offer German-speaking contact persons and shore excursions. The onboard languages offered are usually specified in the travel advertisement. There is also the option of filtering according to a desired language.

Do you travel alone? With the whole family? Do you prefer the big adventure in nature or do you want to be entertained as well? There is a suitable lid for every pot - and that's just the same with cruises: apart from a variety of routes, the various cruise lines also show their own individual orientations.

If you are traveling alone, a single cabin will be important to you. Only a few cruise lines offer pure single cabins, usually a single cabin surcharge is calculated for the double cabin used alone. You will find what you are looking for on Norwegian Cruse Line, the cruise line offers extra single cabins. You may also find offers without extra charge at Hapag Lloyd Cruises or at Royal Caribbean.

Whether baby, toddler or teen - on a journey with children different requirements apply than on a cruise alone or in pairs. So the little ones want to be active. If you are planning a family cruise, make sure that there is an entertainment program for children. For example, AIDA Cruises or Costa Cruises are very child-friendly. But also many other cruise lines have specialized on the smallest guests, worthwhile here is an individual consultation with kreuzfahrten.de.

And as far as entertainment and shore excursions are concerned, cruises are as varied as a journey can be. If you do not want 24-hour entertainment, you will surely choose a different ship than the one who expects a selection of great shows, possibly several a day. We are happy to help you in your search for the right ship!
