Looking back: with love for the sea MSC Cruises can look back on a long seafaring tradition - probably the best prerequisite for a cruise line to face the challenges of the future professionally and with a deep-rooted love of the sea. In Germany, MSC is represented by MSC Cruises based in Munich. MSC Cruises is in turn the cruise line of the Mediterranean Shipping Company - hence the abbreviation MSC Cruises. At the end of the 1960s, the cruise line then called Lauro Linien, only operated two ships: the Angelina Lauro and the Achille Lauro. The Mediterranean cruise line took over the line in 1987, first calling it StarLauro Cruises and later MSC Crociere. The cruise line was pleased about the first new building in 2003: the MSC Lirica was launched. Progress continued the next year: the sister ship MSC Opera was completed and the ships European Vision and European Stars, which had been taken over from a shipping company that had gone bankrupt, were henceforth operated under the names MSC Armonia and MSC Sinfonia. These first four Lirica-class ships were to be just the beginning of a remarkable expansion and development of new ship classes.
The Fleet: eight new MSC ships on the horizon MSC Cruises has invested more than 6 billion euros since 2003. The result is a state-of-the-art fleet of currently 19 ships. With 60,000 GT each and a capacity of around 2,000 guests, the first ships in the Lirica class are also the smallest to sail under MSC.
