In Abydos the dog-shaped death god Chontamenti was worshiped. Already in the old kingdom he took possession from the cult of the Osiris originating from the delta of the ancient temples and was set equal to the Chontamenti. The Osiris legend has made Abydos famous as pilgrimage site in ancient Egypt, as one could see the grave of Osiris in the nearby hills Umm el Gaab. Once a year many faithful went on pilgrimage to the mystery plays that were held there in honor of Osiris.
Abydos retained its importance up the late years. From the third intermediate period dates the significant grave system of senior officials and in the 25th dynasty, some members of the Kushite royal family were buried here.
In late antiquity a garrison was stationed in Abydos. Little is known about the extent of the city, Roman and Coptic homes ruins in and around the great temple of Seti I are the only indications. In the area of ​​the monastery Amba Mousa has been located since the Middle Ages a village called Deir Sitt Damyana. Other remains of Coptic settlement form a church built over a temple of the New Kingdom Church and smaller residential buildings in ancient tombs.
