Basel is regarded as one of Europe's most important museum cities. The Art Museum Basel (largest art museum in Switzerland) stands out as the oldest municipal art collection in the world. Key aspects of the museum are artists of the Renaissance as well as the 19th and 20th centuries. Works from around 1960 are on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Other important art collections include the Tinguely Museum Basel and the private Fondation Beyeler which houses in a building designed by Renzo Piano pictures and sculptures primarily of classical modernism. The show room opened in 2003 and is conceptually a mix between public museum, conservatory and Art Research Institute.
Basel is home to many interesting architectural gems. Besides evidence of early modernism with buildings of Karl Moser (concrete church of St. Anthony 1925-27), Hans Bernoulli, Hannes Meyer and Hans Schmid, in the 80s and 90s buildings of Basel office Herzog & de Meuron, servants or Morger and Degelo have been added. Internationally renowned architects such as Renzo Piano (Museum Fondation Beyeler) or Donald Judd have built in Basel.
The 105-meter-high Trade Fair Tower with 31 floors is the tallest commercial building in Switzerland.
