The Duero is a river in northwestern Spain and northern Portugal (Portuguese name Douro). It is about 895 km long and has a catchment area of about 98,400 square kilometers.

From the Spanish-Portuguese border to the area of Régua the areas around the Douro are the strictly delimited cultivation area of the port wine. In earlier times, the barrels were shipped on boats to the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto.
