Brattahlid / Greenland

Brattahlið ("steep slope") is a formerViking settlement founded in 985 by the Icelandic navigator Erik the Red. It laid on the bank of the Erikfjord in southern Greenland. Today in its place is the small sheep farmer settlement Qassiarsuk with around 50 residents.

From an archeological point of view is the excavation site of Brattahlið of great importance, since it was here the foundations of the oldest Christian church in all of Greenland were found. It was built around 1000 at the request of the wife of Erik the Red. Near the settlement were discovered  the tracks of the first Thing-place of the island, on which meetings and jurisdictions once took place.
