Buenos Aires / Argentina

The Argentine capital Buenos Aires, founded in 1536, is located on the Rio de la Plata, a funnel-shaped mouth of the rivers Paraná and Uruguay into the Atlantic Ocean, on the east coast of the South American continent.
It is not only commercial and cultural center of the country, but also an elegant shopping paradise.

Especially worth seeing are the National Art Museum, the History Museum and Teatro Colón and the grandiose opera house Teatro Colón. In the 20th century, the city was completely modernised so that there are only a few important historic buildings left. One of the few exceptions is the massive cathedral, erected in the 18th century. San Martin, Argentina’s liberator, is buried here. The old town, with its narrow lanes and Plaza de Mayo, is still preserved. Plaza de Mayo became sadly known all around the world because of the mothers keeping silent watch here every Thursday, in memory of their children, who died during the military regime. Behind the Plaza de Mayo lies Casa Rosada, the pink presidential palace, and the former Town Hall, built during the18th century. North of Plaza de Mayo you find the shopping and theatre quarter. In La Boca, one of the oldest quarters of the city, live predominantly descendents of Italian immigrants. Museo de Bellas Artes de la Boca (the Museum of Arts) counts as one of the most interesting tourist attractions. Many colonial buildings are still preserved in San Telmo, the artists’ quarter of Buenos Aires. Coffee shops and a friendly atmosphere are very common here as well as the antiques market held on weekends. There are wonderful parks all over the city inviting you to take long walks; the Botanical Garden and the Zoo are also worth seeing. The „Gran Café Tortoni“: great minds of the Argentinean culture are supposed to have met in this penumbrous tavern, to discuss and start the implementation of great projects. The not very artistic bronze bust of Jorge Luis Borges, the poet and writer venerated here as well, is a reminder of those times. Estancias (ranches) lie not far away from Buenos Aires, here you will be offered the best Argentine asados (grilled dishes, steaks). You can also meet the legendary gauchos (Argentine cowboys) here or let your eyes travel across the endless pampa.
