The red Chateaneuf-du-Pape is one of the full-bodied wines of France. Even small vintages build ten years, top wines even mature over several decades. In 2002, the cultivated area had 3200 ha. Dominating are the large estates with their own bottling, only seven percent of the amount is produced by the cooperative. Viticulture in the southern Rhone Valley probably goes back to the Greeks, who in the 6th century BC founded the city of Marseille.
