Corsica is an island in the Mediterranean and a region of France.It is located west of Italy and north of the Italian island Sardinia. Corsica currently has about 250,000 inhabitants, the capital is Ajaccio. The island is very mountainous. Approximately 86% of the island consists of mountainous land and only 14% coastal plain. The highest peak is Monte Cinto with 2706 m, about 25 km away from the sea.The Corsican aboriginal population consisted of Iberians who mixed over time with various other peoples. After Corsica was initially subject to the Roman Popes, from 1300 it belonged to Genua. In the 18th century the Genoese sold the island to France. The name of the island Corsica or French Corse probably goes back to the Phoenician term korsai meaning " covered with forests ".

Corsica also prides itself on a rich and nourishing cuisine. One of the many specialties are the loose pig that feed on chestnuts, acorns and beech nuts and whose meat is then smoked over chestnut wood
