Deception Island / Antarctic

Deception Island is one of the active volcanoes in the Antarctic. On Deception Island, in the area of the South Shetland-Islands, eruptions have occurred quite often, the last one took place in 1967. The beach that appears to us snow white is actually black covered by the thick white snow. In the large crater lake, a sunken volcano, one can marvellously bathe in hot water. The volcanic activity is still today ubiquitous: the hydrogen sulphide smell prevails in the air and steam ascends on the strand.
