Delfzijl is a municipality with around 27,000 inhabitants, located in the northern Dutch province of Groningen. For the time  around 400 BC the first traces of settlement for the area were detected around the present town. Delfzijl itself was first mentioned in the year 1303.

In many districts of the municipality, there are beautiful medieval churches to visit, among them in Bierum, Godlinz, Holwierde and Spijk. Beautiful old windmills can be admired in the main town of Delfzijl, as well as in Farmsum and in Spijk. The Delfzijler mill also houses a gallery of modern art. Those who want to learn more about the history of the community, can do so at  the town museum, near the port. In the same building is also the aquarium. A delightful flair of originality sprays the small fishing port of Termunterzijl.
