Santa Cruz is,after Isabela, the second largest island of the Galapagos Archipelago and also the most populous. The nearly circular island is of volcanic origin and has a land area of about 986 km2. On the south side of Santa Cruz is Puerto Ayora, the capital of the island with a population of 15,000 inhabitants, the largest city of all Galapagos Islands. Since 1978 the Galapagos Islands are on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. The islanders today live mainly from tourism.

The highland in the center of Santa Cruz Island is dominated by extinct volcanoes, hilly landscapes, as well as a rich flora (sunflower forests) and fauna (giant turtles). But also other parts of the island charm with their flora and fauna (mangrove forests, iguanas, sea lions ...).
During a hike to and on the Dragon Hill you can explore the hinterland and the local saltwater lagoon where with a little bit of luck you can watch flamingos. A path leads from here up to the Dragon Hill where many land iguanas are native.
