The Baja California Peninsula is politically divided into two states. The northern part is simply called Baja California, while the southern part is called Baja California Sur. Baja California extends over 1,300 kilometers from Tijuana, on the US border, as far as Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip. Thus, Baja California is about twice as long as the Florida Peninsula and around 150 kilometers longer than the boot-shaped peninsula of Italy.
In the port city of Ensenada live 256 577 people. Ensenada is one of the most beautiful cities in Baja with palm trees, dunes, kilometers of sandy beaches and the turquoise Pacific, promenades and colorful houses. In the port there are many cruise ships that can be observed during a walk.

The wild headland south of California promises a unique natural experience. A road leads from San Diego along the coast through incredibly wild, colorful cacti and mountain landscapes.
Baja California consists mainly of desert areas. No wonder that the most diverse plant family of the peninsula are the cacti. There are about 120 different species of cacti in Baja California. Nearly half of them are endemic. That is, they are to be found only on this peninsula and nowhere else in the world. King among the cacti is the cardón, which can reach heights of up to 20 meters. The great splendid fellows are mostly found in remote areas and difficult terrain. The Cardón is very easy to recognize because it is not only the highest cactus, but also the one with the thickest (tree-like) stem.
Also interesting is a tree with a short, massive trunk and thick, twisted branches and a jumble of scrawny branches, the torote. It is also called elephant tree because of the color, the shape and the "wrinkles" of its stem. It usually has leaves only during a few weeks during the year, part of the year it spends in some kind of dormancy. For many the torote with the thin, dry crackled branches acts then as if dead. But after one of the rare desert rain it bears again in no time thousands of tiny green leaves and spreads out a pleasant scent. The animal kingdom also has to adapt to the climatic conditions. The turkey buzzard is not dangerous for people and can be observed on his flight in search of food. The gray whales are very tame and even come to the boats to get a few strokes there.
