Already in the Middle Ages developed the former free imperial city as hub of European trade routes and was for centuries the coronation place of the German emperors. The city is now one of the major European financial and trading centers. Today 368 banks including the German Bundesbank and around 230 foreign banks as well as the world's fourth largest stock exchange have their headquarters here. With 569,000 jobs, Frankfurt has almost as many employees as inhabitants (650,000).
The city is known for its internationality and multilingualism. This is also reflected in the international Rhein-Main airport, with more than 45 million passengers per year. It is the second largest in Europe. Across the borders of Europe the Frankfurt Fair, by the way, the oldest in the world, is also known.

Three of the major attractions are located close together in Frankfurt's old town: the imperial cathedral, Römerberg and St.Paul's Church.
The imperial cathedral of St.Bartholomew with its striking late Gothic west tower was the election and coronation place of the German emperor. From the cathedral to the Römerberg led the royal route, the procession route of the newly crowned emperor to the banquet at the city hall. Opposite the cathedral is today the historical garden with excavations from the Roman and Carolingian period.
The Römerberg is the central square of the old town with the town hall (Römer) from the 14th century, the early Gothic old St.Nicholas Church and the row of houses reconstructed after the war destructionon on the east side of the square. Between Römerberg and Zeil is the Church of Our Lady, built in the 14th century.
The St.Paul's Curch is a classicist building, opened in 1789, site of the National Assembly of 1848-49. The St.Paul's Place is a lively town square with street cafes.
The two banks of the Main are increasingly becoming the most attractive urban space of Frankfurt. To this end, projects contribute to the development as the Museum Embankment, the relocation of the flea market, the construction of the cycle path along the banks of the Main or the architecturally sophisticated Main bridges. The Iron Bridge, a footbridge from 1863, is one of the landmarks of the city. The view from one of the eastern downtown Main bridges on the old town and skyline is also used in the media as an illustration for contributions from Frankfurt.
