Hakodate / Japan

Hakodate is with around 300,000 inhabitants the third largest city of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and is located in a bay on the Tsugaru Strait. The original name of the city is "Usukeshi", meaning "head of the bay." Already to the 15th century dates the construction of a defense system. The city was one of the five ports at the end of the Edo period (1603 - 1867) which was open to foreign trde ships. Through the Seikan Tunnel Hakodate is connected to the town Aomori on Honshu, Japan's main island.

Since Hakodate was one of the first towns open to foreigners there are some very European-looking building, especially in the so-called. Motomachi district. From the 335-m-high mountain Hakodate-yama one has great views over the entire city in good weather. The city center extends to the foot of the mountain and around the harbor. Interesting are moreover the star-shaped Fort Goryokaku (1857 - 1864) and the Orthodox Church of Hakodate.
