Harlingen is a port city in the Dutch province of Friesland. The name probably derives from the manor Harlinga. In 1234 Harlingen receives city status. Towards the end of the 16th century the city experienced an economic boom, which was partly due to a flourishing fish trade with England. Today, the 16,000-inhabitant city lives mainly from agriculture, marine, sea fishing and tourism. There are ferry connections to the West Frisian Islands Terschelling and Vlieland. At the new fishing port, especially shellfish are brought ashore. Harlingen also has some smaller shipyards where however, only yachts are built.
