Havana (full Spanish name: San Cristóbal de La Habana) is the capital of Cuba and with over two million inhabitants, the largest city in the Caribbean. In 1515 Havana was founded by conquistador Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar near the present town Batabanó. In 1519 the city already was moved to its present location. Thanks to its ideal location it soon developed into an important commercial and military port. In the 16th century the city suffered greatly from attacks by pirates, it was looted and burned. In 1607 Havana became the capital of the Spanish colony Cuba. After a period of British occupation it first went back to Spain. In 1898 Cuba finally became independent. In 1982 Havana was declared a UNESCO world cultural heritage. The city is now the most important industrial center in Cuba.
