Helsinki, the capital and the largest city in Finland, has around 550,000 inhabitants. The "white city by the sea" extends, located in southern Finland aGAINST the Estonian capital Tallinn, on several islands. The city was founded in 1550 on the river Vantaa on the oder of the Swedish king Gustav Wasa command to create a competitive port to Reval (Tallinn) dominated by Russia. Since Helsinki was located unfavorable for navigation its importance remained for a long time very limited. This also did not change when the Swedish governor Per Brahe had the city moved closer to the sea in 1640. On April 8, 1812 Helsinki became capital of Finland, when after the conquest by the Russians the tsar wished for a capital for the Grand Duchy closer to St. Petersburg (and thus to Russia). Since 1918, Helsinki is the capital of the independent Republic of Finland.
