Hoi An ("peaceful meeting place") is a Vietnamese coastal town located on the South China Sea, in the province of Quang Nam. Around 25,000 people live here. Already in the 16th and 17th century the port at the (now partially silted) estuary of the Thu Bon was an important trading center. Therefore, many Chinese, and later Japanese, Dutch and Indians settled here. In 1999, the old town of Hoi An, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site, as it is a well-preserved example of a southeast Asian trading port dating from the period from the 15th to the 19th century, whose wonderful examples show the fusion of native and foreign cultural traditions.

By no means miss the Museum of the City History, which presents the culturally diverse history of the city in a very impressive way. Well worth seeing are also the Chinese assembly halls with its affiliated temples, the Japanese bridge (Chùa Cau) from the 17th century and the Tan Ky trading house (19th century).
Visitors can at the flat price of 75,000 VND purchase a ticket which entitles you to attend one of the three Chinese assembly halls, one of the four old houses (e.g with a traditional pharmacy) and either the Japanese bridge or the Temple of Quan Công. The ticket is valid, among others, for the visit to one of the three museums as well as for a concert of traditional music or a handicrafts workshop.
