Hong Kong (English: "fragrant harbor") is a special administrative region of the southern Chinese coast. This is made up of the islands of Hong Kong (with the capital Victoria) and Lantao, many smaller islands, and the Kowloon peninsula with the same-named port city and its hinterland. The urban center - and thus Hong Kong in a narrow sense - are the cities Victoria and Kowloon separated by a strait. Here live more than 4 million people. For a long time British crown colony, Hong Kong returned, due to an agreement concluded in 1984 on July 1 1997 as a special administrative region under Chinese sovereignty.

Despite popular beliefs, Hong Kong is not a "cultural desert". There is a growing number of museums and cultural events, which are subsidized by the government. In addition, in this high-tech city has survived more Chinese culture than in many other areas of China. This is due to the fact that Hong Kong has been spared from the Cultural Revolution and at the same time served as a refuge for many artists. Worth seeing are, among others, the Sha Tin Temple with its 12,280 Buddha statues, the village of the Sung Dynasty, the nature reserve Tai Po Kau, the Botanical Garden of Kadoorie and the Railway Museum. On Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong Park is the Museum of Tea Ware housed at the Flagstaff House, the oldest surviving colonial building. It documents around 3,000 exhibits, the history of tea in China. Very interesting and relatively new for visitors is also the Heritage Museum in the Shatin district. It presents in a very modern and lively manner in permanent as well as temporary exhibitions the aspects of the history and culture of Hong Kong.
Pure art collections are the Art Museum of the Chinese University, the Tsui Museum of Art and the University Museum.
