Honolulu is the capital and main port of the US state of Hawaii. The 370,000-inhabitant city lies on the southern coast of the island of Oahu and is one of the largest cities in the Pacific. In English Honolulu means "sheltered harbor". There is no clear evidence as to when Honolulu was first settled, but it is believed that the Polynesians were the first who settled here in the 12th century. In 1845, Kamehameha III made Honolulu the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. And the city remained so when Hawaii became in 1959 federal state of the USA.

One of the main attractions of Honolulu is "Aliiolani Hale", an administrative building of the city. It was completed in 1874 and united all key government agencies of the former kingdom. Today the building houses the Supreme Court, a historical center and a law library. Very interesting is also the Bishop Museum Honolulu with Hawaiian Hall in which the crown jewels are exhibited. In the historic part of Honolulu, you can admire the Iolani Palace and the King Kamehameha Statue. Also known are the beach Waikiki, near the town, and the naval port Pearl Harbor, site of the Japanese surprise attack on December 7,1941.
