The Dutch city of Hoorn, located in the northwest of the province, on a promontory in the IJsselmeer, was founded in the 12th century and has today has about 68,000 residents. The town's name became world known when Willem Schouten, a sailor born in 1580 in Hoorn together with Le Maire 1615-1617 circumnavigated the southern part of Tierra del Fuego (South America) and named the archipelago after its hometown: Cape Horn.
