Ilhabela / Brazil

The "beautiful island" Ilhabela is the largest Brazilian Atlantic island. It is located off the east coast of the country between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo and is often called the island of São Sebastião. It is of volcanic origin and  thus provides an interesting and varied nature. Dense forest, beaches and waterfalls make the stay here a real pleasure. The east coast is almost uninhabited and somewhat rougher and rockier than the west.

You will probably call at Vila Ilhabela. There are some buildings from the colonial period, among which the church Da Ajuda as well as some cosy bars. Although the island is rather big, almost all the sights (apart from the mountain peak) can be quickly reached by vehicles. They include Pedras de Sino, hollow stones that sound like bells when you strike them with another stone. The trip there itself takes you through lush and colourful vegetation. on every ride you will bump into monkeys and birds, waterfalls and sugar cane plantations emerge time and again and depending where you are, some wonderful views of the mountains or the sea unfold in front of you. Hikes in the mountains are recommended only if you stay longer. In order to discover the underwater you can go diving and simply relax on the beaches.
