Kiel is characterized by the proximity to the sea; due to the destruction of the city in World War II it has now, however, no more old town, which would be recognized as such. The city is dominated by buildings from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Conspicuous is the Naval Memorial at Laboe. Other attractions include the botanical garden, the sluices of the North Sea Canal and the picturesque cliff top at Kiel-Friedrichsort. Highlight of the event calendar is the Kiel Week held annually, the largest sailing event in the world.
