Kotor / Montenegro

Kotor is a port city in Montenegro. It has about 19,000 residents. The town lies on the Bay of Kotor and is famous for its old town. In the 14th century Kotor played such a large role for the trade in the Adriatic Sea, that iy vied for competition with Venice and the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). In 1420 the city and harbor came under Venetian rule.
The Bay of Kotor is one of the best known and most visited tourist destinations in Montenegro.

Breathtaking is the view across the shallow waters of the Adriatic to the Black Mountains. Steep cliffs surround the Bay of Kotor. As a Scandinavian fjord it intersects in the Dalmatian coast of Montenegro. Like many protected bays here too was a hideout for buccaneers and pirates, as well as a trading post and naval base.
Palaces, cathedrals and churches, witnesses of more than two thousand years of cultural history were largely destroyed by the devastating earthquake in April 1979. UNESCO placed in the same year the two towns of Perast and Kotor on their so-called "Red List" of endangered natural and cultural heritage, to initiate international action to save these world heritage cities. However many buildings were rebuilt and stand now next to ruins, for whose restoration lack the resources. Nevertheless, the bay, with its fascinating landscape and the sites of past abundance as UNESCO world natural and world cultural heritage again day destination of cruises in the Adriatic.
