The city Maceió is the capital of the Brazilian state of Alagoas. It lies on the Atlantic coast and has about 800,000 inhabitants. On the territory of today's Maceió there have been sugar plantations since the 17th century. In 1815, the settlement of Maceió received city status and in 1839 it became capital of the Alagoas erhoben. Located between the ocean and the Mundaú Lagoon, it is also called the "city of water". The Tupi Indians called this place "Macai-o-k": place which clogged the lagoon. The city has spread to a natural terrace created by the sea and slowly "clogged" the mouth of the Rio Mundaú, behind the dam arose the Mundaú Lagoon and the River chose a different route to the sea, on the south, pointed outskirts of the capital , the "Pontal". Maceió is the birthplace of football coach Mario Zagallo. As a player and as a coach he became world champion with Brazil.
