Mahón, Menorca (Balearic Islands) / Spain

Mahon ( Spanish Mahon) is the capital of the Balearic island of Menorca. The town was founded by the Carthaginians. Legend has it that General Mago Barkas, the brother of Hannibal, have the city gave its name. Mahon became the island capital in 1722 during the British occupation.

The architecture of Maó was heavily influenced by the English. The city gate Pont de Sant Roc (built around 1500) is the only preserved gate of the medieval city walls. In the winding narrow streets of Mahon there are interesting churches and museums in addition to all kinds of shops.
From the main square Plaça de Esplanada you reach through the pedestrian zone the fish and vegetable market under the old cloister of a former convent. From there you have a magnificent view of the port of Maó. The Genoese Admiral Andrea Doria called Maó one of three safe things for a sailor in the Mediterranean: July, August and Mahon. The fjord with a length of 5.5 km and a width of up to 1.2 km is the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean and served maritime nations in all eras as a secure base of its fleet. Today it is a popular destination for yachts and cruisers from around the world.
