Makarska is a Croatian coastal town with 14,000 inhabitants, located on the Adriatic. The original ancient settlement, which was called Muccurum according to tradition was destroyed in 548 by the Ostrogoth king Totila. The city went through a very turbulent history over the centuries and has been successively dominated by a variety of peoples and royal families, including Romans, Croats, Venetians and Habsburgs.

Worth seeing is,among others, the Baroque Church of St. Philip Neri and the building of the former Oratorian Monstery which can be seen both from the shore. If you follow the avenue of the shore street Marineta up to the wooded Osejava cape, you can reach the Franciscan Monastery in Makarska with its beautiful cloister. The monastery church with its Baroque bell tower now houses an art gallery, the mentioned cloister a malakological collection (malakology deals with the study of molluscs). In no case miss a visit to the Baroque parish church of St. Mark built in the18th century on the northern side of the Kacic Square, in the historic center of Makarska. In its interior you can admire, among others, the silver altar of the Madonna del Rosario (1818) and the marble Venetian main altar from the 18th century.
