Maniitsoq ( in German something like uneven place; Danish;Sukkertoppen) is a municipality in West Greenland (Kitaa) with about 3000 inhabitants.
The place is located on an island with inland alpine landscape. In the hinterland, the mountains rise to a height of 2000 m. Temperatures range from 20 degrees Celsius in summer to -40 degrees in winter. In the rocks there are precious stone deposits with diamonds, rubies and lazurite. In the hinterland live reindeers and muskox.
Archaeological finds indicate at least 4000 years of settlement history. The village was established in 1755 by Norwegian merchants and probably because of the glaciated mountain summit got the Danish name Gammel Sukkertoppen, old sugar loaf.
