The Spanish town of Melilla (about 55,000 inhabitants) is an exclave on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco. Walls surrounded the city located on a peninsula. From the port, iron, lead, zinc, fish and fruit are exported. The most important industries of Melilla are fish processing and shipbuilding. The city dates back to a foundation of the Phoenicians called Rusadir. It stood successively under the rule of the Romans and the Arabs before it fell to Spain in 1497.
The city was initially border fortress of the Kingdom of Tlemcen and the Kingdom of Fez. In 1497 the city was conquered by Spain. Since the founding of the state in 1956 Morocco has been claiming Melilla, the neighboring Ceuta as well as some small Spanish islands off the coast of Africa, which also belong to the group of the Plaza de soberanía.
