Nanortalik is a harbor town on the extreme south end of Greenland and with its 2,500 inhabitants belongs to the larger places in the area. The town itself is located on a small island on the great Tasermiut Fjord, home to seals, whales, polar foxes, sea eagles and many songbirds. Not far from the city nest such rare birds as parrot birds, ice stormbirds or little auks.
In the early summer with the drifting ice even polar bears come close to the city. In fact, Nanortalik translated means something like "bear place", because both traditionally as well as today hunting, of course not only bearhunting, is of great importance for the place and its inhabitants. But also fishing and sheep-breeding are dealth with there. Less traditionally and fully adapted to the present-day requirements is the large fish processing factory of the city.
Cruise offers to the port Nanortalik / Greenland
For tourists, Nanortalik is popular mainly because of its harsh natural beauty. Up to 2000-m-high, often glaciated granite mountains are a paradise for extreme climbers. For hikers or cruisers, the Tasermiut Fjord at the end of which the inland ice drops directly into the sea from 1400 m, offers a breathtaking view.
In the vicinity of the town there are also some protected valleys with wooded areas and an impressive flora.
From an excursion to the small island of Unartoq with its hot springs you can perhaps take with you even a special travel souvenir. On the Mountain Kirkespiret is a gold mine and it is said that in the rivers of the surrounding area small gold pieces are sometimes found.
