Narssaq is a port town in the South of Greenland. Even if it counts only about 1700 inhabitants, it is already one of the larger places in the region.
The location is geographically on the same latitude with Oslo, which with a mixture of subarctic and Atlantica temperate climate provides for quite warm summers (with temperatures up to 15 ° C) and in winter makes rain fall instead of snow.
The landscape around Narssaq is corresponding: especially green birch, willowherb, blueberry, crowberry and cotton grass grow on green mountains. But of course, here, also the ice of Greenland also has a great impact on the surrounding area. Directly north of Narssaq is the Sermilik or Icefjord, which is filled with numerous icebergs.
The animal world there offers a great variety with several species of seals, polar foxes, reindeer, snow bunnies and many bird species, but traditional hunting is only of little importance for the population. More important are fishing and fish processing. In Narssaq there is also the only slaughterhouse in Greenland. Here is where all the sheep and reindeer from the area are delivered for slaughter.
The area around Narssaq is also known for its mineral resources, but a nearby uranium mine is however shut down.
Cruise offers to the port Narsaq / Greenland
In addition to the beautiful mountain landscape and the impressive ice fjord, Narssaq still offers a very special attraction. While the town itself is characterized by a mixed architectural style of hunting huts and modern residential blocks, the ruins of northern mansions from the Viking age (from 500 AD) can still be seen nearby. At Quassiarsuk a complete courtyard has been restored and demonstrates visitors the then lifestyle.
