Pico, Azores / Portugal

Pico is the second largest of the Azores islands with 447 km2. It was named after the 2,351-meter-high volcano at its center, the Ponta do Pico, which is, as the same time  the highest mountain in the country. The island is well known for its excellent wine, which was even purchased from the Russian tsar in the 19th century. Its unique flavor the noble drops owes to the volcanic soils of the island. In 2004, UNESCO declared the tradition of wine cultivation on Pico as world cultural heritage.

Until 1987 whales were till caught on the island in small style. This is documented at the Whale Museum of Lajes do Pico and a former whale factory in São Roque. The capture of these marine giants was replaced by a whale watching boom in the mid-1980s. Take part in one of these unforgettable boat trips starting from Lajes do Pico and Madalena. Also snorkeling or diving is offered during which you can get in close contact with dolphins. An exciting experience is also a visit to the Gruta das Torres, the longest volcanic cave of the Azores, which can partly be visited today.
