Pico is the second largest of the Azores islands with 447 km2. It was named after the 2,351-meter-high volcano at its center, the Ponta do Pico, which is, as the same time the highest mountain in the country. The island is well known for its excellent wine, which was even purchased from the Russian tsar in the 19th century. Its unique flavor the noble drops owes to the volcanic soils of the island. In 2004, UNESCO declared the tradition of wine cultivation on Pico as world cultural heritage.
