Portland is an English limestone island, located in the English Channel. Nowadays it is rather a peninsula, since it is connected by the Chesil Beach, a narrow land bridge to the mainland. Portland is part of the Jurassic Coast in southern England and thus also belongs to the UNESCO world heritage site. The island was once known mainly for its quarries. With the limestone mined here have been built, among others, the London St. Paul's Cathedral and the UN headquarters in New York.

In Portland, you can admire the world's largest artificially constructed harbor with a size of 9 km2. Its foundation was laid in 1849 by Prince Albert and for its imposing wave breakers 6 million tons of stone were used. At its southern end, in 2012 the sailing contests of the Summer Olympics will take place, as Portland has the best sailing waters in Europe, alongside Weymouth. During your walks around the island, you will also discover some of the impressive lighthouses of Portland, including the Portland Bill lighthouse in the south computer-controlled since 1996. One of the former lighthouses inland now houses an important bird watching station. Do not miss a visit to the Portland Castles, once built by King Henry VIII as a defense site against the French.
