The city stretches between the coast and the mountainous hinterland. Despite all the systematic enlargement plans in the last 20 years, Ras Al Khaimah has continued to maintain its rural character. Worth a visit is the Old Fort, dating from the 18th century, which was rebuilt in the 19th century after its destruction by the British and today houses the National Museum.
