Iceland's capital is Reykjavík, located in the west of the country and has about 110,000 inhabitants. As there are some steam columns near the city, the city was so named (Reykjavík = smoking bay). The city has a deep sea port, the most important island, and has a small lake in the middle of the town, the Tjörnin.

Quite central in the old town is the Austurvöllur Square with the statue of Jón Sigurdhsson, the champion of an independent Iceland. Next to it, the parliament building Althing from the 19th century and the Reykjavik Cathedral. Not far from it is the oldest building of the city from the 18th century, and opposite the Ingólfstorg with steaming basal columns. From there towards the bus station is the main shopping street.
The church of Hallgríms is the landmark of the city and has a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings. Although the church is medieval, it was built in the 20th century. You should also not miss Lake Tjörnin. Especially for bird lovers, it is a small paradise. Close to the art gallery and Thjódminjasafnidh, the National Museum.
Just outside there is a beautiful open-air museum. In the surroundings there are very relaxing thermal springs, a botanical garden and a little further the blue lagoon. In and around Reykjavik every visitor will find something for his taste.
