In the year 609, it first served as a consecrated place of worship of the Virgin Mary of the Roman Catholic Church. It is now generally regarded as best-preserved monument of ancient Rome.Also pay a vist to the Colosseum built in 80 AD, marvel at the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo and by no means miss a visit to the Vatican Museums with its many world famous works of art. A must for each visitor to  Rome is furthermore the Vatican with the St. Peter's Basilica and the St Peter's Square planned by Bernini.
