Rothensee with its 2,800 inhabitants is a district of Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. The "red lake" which gave the vilalge its name is probably a former bathing lake fed by an old Elbarm. According to legend, this lake originated from the blood of a dead lindworm. For the first time, Rothensee was first mentioned in 1176, the exact date of its foundation is not known.

A typical building for the 1920s, the former school of red brick built in 1925, is located in the Windmühlenstraße.
