Samaná (complete: Santa Barbara de Samana) is a city in the north of the Dominican Republic with about 40,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1756, it burned completely in the middle of the 20th century, which is why the cityscape is not typical for the Dominican Republic. Most visitors also come to Samana as the city is called for short to observe the humpback whales that live here.

The mating season of the whales is in January and February, a time that is particularly exciting for whale watching. But also the rest of the year the huge animals are swimming here in the waters and rear their calves.
Around Samana there are forest-rich mountains with rainforests, with waterfalls and white dream beaches on crystal clear water. The Los Haitises National Park, for example, is at the end of the bay of Samana, where islands of limestone rise from the water, dolphins play in the water, pelicans and parrots can be seen.In the national park there are mangrove marshes.
The life of the city, on the other hand, takes place at the Malecón, the harbor promenade, with many public buildings and bars. There are also markets and the city is hardly to be surpassed in animation.
