St. George is one of the two inhabited islands of the archipelago of the Pribilof Islands with a population of about 125 inhabitants. This island group of volcanic origin belongs to the US state of Alaska and lies north of the Aleutians in the Bering Sea. For the first time St. George was officially landed on in 1788 by the Russian navigator Gavriil Loginovich Pribylow, but the island group had regularly been used by the Inuit as hunting base long time before that.
