Tahuata is one of the southern main islands of the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia), a mountainous island group near the equator. About ten rugged islands belong to this archipelago, located 1,500 kilometers from Tahiti. Main means of transportation is the helicopter, the badly passable roads on the islands can be used only by an off-road vehicle. Horses are the best way to explore the inland. Tahuata can be reached by boat from the island of Hiva Oa wherefrom it is only separated by a few killometers wide channel. In Vaitahu, the capital of the island, the French took possession of the Marquesas Islands.
