Like guardians, the two mighty Memnon's colossi tower in the plain. They are the former remains of the gigantic temple of Amenhotep III which however were damaged by an earthquake. The main attraction is the Valley of the Kings, with the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922. But also the other, less well-known royal tombs are impressive because of their variety of reliefs and murals. Worth mentioning is the Rames Museum, the Dead Temple of Ramses the Great and the Medinet Habu, the  Dead Temple of Ramses III. These two giant sites were also used as a palace during the reign of the respective pharaohs. The most impressive of all is surely the tomb of Hatshepsut in Deir-el-Bahri. The temple is located directly in front of a steep cliff wall, showing an unusually modern architecture for Egypt.
