The French mediterranean town of Toulon, capital of the Var département, is located approximately 70 km southeast of Marseille. Toulon was already known as Telo Martius in ancient Greece as Telonien and at the time of the Roman Empire as Telo Martius. The port was small and insignificant at first, but gained in importance as of 1404, when Louis of Anjou made it a starting point of his campaigns to Naples. The port city is today the most important naval base of France in the Mediterranean and has played a strategically important role in the liberation of France by the national socialists. The best way to get a first impression of the lively center of the Mediterranean is from the bird's eye view: from Vieux Six-Foursaus or from Mont Faron you can admire the city as it is nestled in the landscape. Also the view from the harbor should not be missed. In the center of the city, the intimate Place Puget with its dolphin fountain recalls the brilliant sculptor and architect Pierre Puget. The artist, trained in Italy at Bernini, was commissioned in 1656 to produce the sculptures for the new town hall on the quay, which was destroyed at reconquest of Toulon by the Allies in the 1944. Fortunately, Puget's famous Atlantean portal was preserved, which now adorns the simple building built after the war. The district located in the old town between the Cathédrale Ste-Marie-de-la-Seds and the small church of St-François-de-Paule near the port, is one of the most beautiful and colorful of Toulon. There is a lively market here every morning.
