Tunis is the capital of Tunisia and one of the oldest cities on the Mediterranean. The city center consists of a historic old town (medina) and a new town, built during the colonial period by the French. During the colonial period, also a 10-km-long road dam was built across the lake of Tunis connecting the city center with the port town of La Goulette. The name Tunis derives from tuna (lat. Thynnus). Already in ancient Tunisia the tuna trade had an outstanding economic importance and today tuna is still a main component of the local cuisine.

The cityscape is characterized by the strong contrast between the old town and the European-like new town. The old town (Medina) is one of the world cultural heritage sites of UNESCO and shows the usual construction of Arabian old towns with its winding streets. In the center is the Ez-Zitouna Mosque, which is the most important mosque in Tunisia after the Great Mosque of Cairouan. Around the mosque is the market square. Traditionally, each of the souks (market lanes) is assigned to a particular industry, such as perfumery traders, shoe traders, or fabric traders. The new town was founded in the 19th century. The main axis is Boulevard Habib Bourguiba, which is lined with shops, cafes and hotels.
