The "Iron Gate" is one of the most imposing troughs in Europe. In the fascinating region, which is considered to be the most beautiful section of the Danube,start the Dobrudja, a hilly land with moors and an extensive swamp delta stretching as far as the Black Sea. The most important sights near Turnu Severin are the remains of a bridge built in the years 102 to 105 AD by the Roman architect Apollodorus of Damascus and the ruins of the appertaining military camp. The Danube was at that time a border river of the Roman Empire and the bridge was used by Trajan in the years 105/106 to invade Dakia. This second Dacian war ended with the annexation of Dacia as the province of Dacia to the Roman Empire.
