The port of Ushuaia, located on the Beagle Channel, is the capital of the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego and is considered the southernmost city on earth. Many European expeditions have come to this area to explore the climate, the geography, the animal and plant life and the Indian tribes.
Due to the proximity to the national park of the Tiera del Fuego, Ushuaia is now a tourist center. The city is also popular as a starting point for Antarctic expeditions and intermediate stops for cruise ships. Since due to the remoteness of Ushuaia, almost all the goods have to be brought to the city over long distances, this is one of the most expensive cities in South America.

An interesting tourist destination is the Museo del Fin del Mundo (Museum of the End of the World), which places particular emphasis on the preservation of the natural and historical characteristics of Tierra del Fuego.
The Presidio, a prison completed in 1920, houses today a combination of several museums, including the history of the prison, the navigation in the region and the history of the Antarctic expeditions that started from Ushuaia. The convicts built the narrow-gauge railway Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino, which today drives tourists through the Fireland National Park.
From the Glaciar Martial near Ushuaias you can enjoy an impressive view over the city and the Chilean mountains.
