The French city of Vienne in the Dauphiné is the second largest city in the department of Isère after Grenoble. It is located on the left bank of the Rhône, 30 kilometers south of Lyon. The city, which was designated as Vienna, was the second capital of southern Galicia in the Roman Empire and is closely linked to the legend about the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate, who is said to have died here. In the third century it became bishop seat. In 1311/12 the Council of Vienne took place here during which the defeat of the Templar Order was decided upon by the French King Philip IV the Fair.
