Villa Real de San Antonio / Spain

Vila Real de Santo António in the Portuguese Algarve is a border town to Spain at the Rio Guadiana. The city with about 9,000 inhabitants, was built in only 5 months at the order of absolutist minister Marques Pombal after being destroyed in the 18th century by a seaquake. The streets were modeled after the model of the suburbs of Lisbon, which were also built after the earthquake, and the houses were built in the same style. Until 1991, the city was the transit point for every tourist who wanted to enter Portugal from southern Spain. Since the construction of the bridge over the Rio Guadiana, the transit traffic now passes by the city.

The city is quiet and calm. The extensive pedestrian zones of the city center and the promenade invite you for a stroll. The Avenida da Republica, the official name of the promenade, has a wide, palm-lined path and fountains that are almost square-shaped against the streets of the city center. The façade of Hotel Guadiana and its Art Nouveau staircase remind us of ancient times. Close to the town is also the historic town of Castro Marim.
