Villefranche (Nice) / France

The picturesque southern French town of Villefranche on the Mediterranean was an important harbor because of its natural bay. The Ligurians settled here enjoyed lively trade relations with the Greeks, who settled on the other side of the bay on Cap Ferrat. Already then a castrum had been erected to protect the harbor. Charles II of Anjou, built Villefranche as its base in Provence. The inhabitants were persuaded with the assurance of tax-freeness - hence the new place name Villefranche (free town - to settle on the coast. In 1557 Duke Emmanuel-Philippe of Savoy extended the place as a port and fortress.

In the former fortress are now two art museums: the Musée Volti with works by artists from Villefranche and the musée Goetz-Boumeester in which you can see,among others, works by Picasso and Miró.
Worth a visit are in Villefranche the Rue Obscure, the covered street that passes under the houses of the old town and the port chapel St Pierre, dating from the 14th century,decorated by the artist Jean Cocteau in 1957.
