Vlissingen is a 45,000-inhabitant port town at the mouth of the Westerschelde, on the south coast of the Walcheren Peninsula in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Vlissingen is an important place for navigation, a base for pilots, who steer the ships through the narrow lanes of the Westerschelde to or from Antwerp. In 1315, Vlissingen got city rights. Fort Rammekens, located east of the city, was built in 1547 to protect ships from the United East India Company. In the 18th century, the city was a major war harbor. Today, Vlissingen is a lively bathing and tourist destination with unique bouleverds and beautiful beaches.
